Naissaar (Naissaari in Finnish, Nargen in German, Nargö in Swedish, sometimes also called Nargent) is an island on the northern coast of Estonia, which separates Tallinn Bay from the rest of the Gulf of Finland.
The Island of Naissa (Terra feminarum) is said to be mentioned for the first time in the Chronicle of Adama of Bremen (1075-1080). During the Crimean War, the island was occupied by the British and French armies in 1854 and 1855.
In 1897, it was planned to build large cottage plots on Naissare, because the island became expensive as a vacation spot. In 1898, 19 plots were assigned, where luxurious cottages were built. A harbor bridge was also built near the cottages (to the north of the current main harbor).
From 1912, the island was militarized, the civilian population was expelled from the island and paid for the lost sources of livelihood (loss of fishing and seal fishing) . Naissaare Suursadam got its present shape before and during the First World War, when Peter the Great’s sea fortress was built around Tallinn. Among other things, harbors, railways and the main position of Peter the Great’s sea fortress Naissaare beach batteries were built on the island.
From December 1917 to February 26, 1918, the Naissare Soviet Republic was located on the island, which was proclaimed by 90 sailors of the Naissare garrison from the Russian battleship Petropavlovsk and the anarcho-syndical Stepan under the leadership of Petrichenko. In essence, it is the killing of officers by mutinous Russian sailors during the break, which had no legal significance, such “republics” were founded all over Russia. During the First World War and the War of Independence, there was also a prison camp on the island.
During Estonia’s independence, the inhabitants returned to the island. In 1939, the island had 404 inhabitants, most of whom were Swedes.
Inhabitants of the island fled to Sweden in 1944, then the island had no civilian population.
During the Soviet period, the island was militarized, a warehouse for sea mines and an assembly plant were built there.
