Osmussaare was probably inhabited already in the Viking Age. The legend of the Scandinavian chief god Odin being buried on the island comes from there. From there, in turn, the Swedish name of the island, Odensholm. Osmussaar is also a geologically fascinating island. One of the most remarkable objects is a bank on the north coast of the island. The one that stretches from the Baltic cliff of Öland is part of the nearly 1200 km long island to Lake Laadoga. On the island and in the surrounding coastal sea, there are plenty of blackish-brown stones – gneiss breccias. They were formed 535 million years ago, when a meteorite fell into the shallow sea ten kilometers northeast of Osmussaari, and due to the high heat and pressure, a new metamorphic rock was formed from the seabed material. During the hike, we will see what or who is skarvan, twins, crocodiles. We look for the rarest plant species in the vegetation of alluvial meadows. We photograph birds, free-roaming Scottish Highland cattle and Icelandic sheep. For military enthusiasts, there is excitement in the catacombs. We enjoy Southt at the foot of the lighthouse.
Come on a spring day to admire the protected plant species of Osmussaare and breathe in the refreshing sea air. Let’s take a day trip on a geologically fascinating island.
