Overview

Osmussaar was probably settled as early as the Viking Age. The legend of the burial of Odin, the chief god of the Scandinavians, on the island comes from there. From this comes the island's Swedish name, Odensholm.

Osmussaar is also geologically interesting. One of the most notable features is the cliff on the northern coast of the island. It is part of the Baltic Klint, which extends from Öland for almost 1200 km to Lake Ladoga.

The island and the coastal sea around it have plenty of blackish-brown stones, gneiss breccias. They were formed 535 million years ago, when a meteorite fell into the shallow sea ten kilometres northeast of Osmussaar and the great heat and pressure created a new metamorphic rock from the seabed material.
